Alfred Brendel (布倫德爾)
List, Brahms, Strawinsky… (4 CD-SET) Alfred Brendel "…we all come from Liszt." When several unconcerned coughs threatened to ruin a soft section of his piano playing, pianist Alfred Brendel interrupted a concert in Chicago with the words: "Ladies and gentleman, I can hear you, but you can't hear me" - and he actually broke off a number of concerts in order to discipline audiences. When asked what he would most wish for at the end of his career, Brendel replied: "That nobody coughs during concerts." Those fortunate enough to have experienced the pianist in the concert hall can judge the serious nature of this reply, perhaps witnessing themselves the stern looks with which Brendel would force audiences into silence. The intense, suspense-filled atmosphere of his concerts was sometimes almost sacred - and certainly had something to do with the artist's ability to demand silence from his listeners. Brendel also made great demands upon himself. His first book was titled Nachdenken uber Musik (Thinking About Music), in which the author justified his preoccupation with Beethoven, Schubert, Liszt and Busoni and the many aspects of interpretation. Brendel was called the "philosopher of piano playing" - and still is. The justification of Brendel being awarded the Herbert von Karajan Music Prize deemed him, "a unique pianist (…), who stands out through his very own pensive, philosophical approach to the work and his reflecting interpretation." Alfred Brendel was awarded this important prize by the foundation's board of trustees in Baden-Baden's Festspielhaus in December 2008, just a few days before Brendel gave his last concert with the Vienna Philharmonic, conducted by Charles Mackerras.
